Hull’s Christmas lights switch-on has been given a brand new venue this year, it has been announced.

The event, which gets the late night shopping season under way, is to take place by the Rose Bowl fountain near Queens Gardens in the city centre on Thursday, November 12.

The switch-on will see four eight-metre high decorated Christmas trees placed around the fountain, lighting up the city centre.

With work continuing to prepare the city centre for Hull’s stint as UK City of Culture in 2017, the Sitka spruces are taking the place of the usual tree in Queen Victoria Square.

Visitors will be kept entertained by host Neil Rudd and live music from local artists from 6.30pm.

They include Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Calum Scott, X Factor contestant Charli Beard and operatic trio Tre Amici. Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull Councillor Anita Harrison will turn on the lights at 7.15pm.

Santa and his reindeer will be on hand to greet young visitors in an area that officials are promising will be transformed into a winter wonderland.
