Hull commuters face possible disruptions after Northern Rail workers agreed to support industrial action.

A dispute, concerning safety and jobs, has seen 80% of Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) members opting for a walkout. A further 90% support other kinds of industrial moves.

The Northern Rail route includes Hull and several other East Yorkshire stations.

The RMT is fighting booking office reductions, a watering down of train guards’ responsibilities and the scrapping of permanent positions, among other issues.

It is also concerned that rail company bosses have failed to give guarantees that staff won’t face compulsory redundancies after next February, when its present franchise ends.

Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT, says the strike ballot was a last resort in trying to compel Northern Rail to seriously consider its grievances. Mr Cash added that safeguarding guards’ positions is crucial to rail safety.

Northern Rail routes also comprise Goole, Hessle, Ferriby, Beverley, Cottingham and Hutton Cranswick.
