Student nurses studying in Hull are being taught how to take care of the spiritual needs of patients.

Nursing students at the University of Hull are going on placements to observe hospital chaplains across East Yorkshire. They are also attending lectures delivered by chaplains in the region.

The Rev Charles Thody, lead chaplain for , is heading up the chaplaincy team from who give the lessons.

He says nurses are an important part of spiritual care because they work on the front line and are often the starting point on a patient’s journey.

He adds that spiritual care is not about quoting from a Bible, but about showing compassion to patients and says he teaches his students to have a caring attitude and to recognise and attend to the needs of the people they are looking after.
