Around a fifth of the 148 schools in East Yorkshire need improvement, according to an Ofsted report.

It says no other region in England has a larger share of schools that need work than Yorkshire and Humber as a whole – and it also has the fewest number of schools that inspectors class as good or outstanding.

In East Yorkshire, 41 of the 148 schools are said to require improvement and the same can be said for 17 of the 58 schools in North East Lincolnshire.

Ofsted carried out 21,050 inspections of schools, nurseries and pupil referral units in the last quarter of 2014. Of those 2,143 were in Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire, with 62 classed as inadequate and 453 needing improvement.

But the inspections are flawed, according to Marvyn Moore, a former Ofsted inspector. He says the findings depend on whether registered inspectors want a quick inspection or a thorough one.
