Young people with mixed abilities are to be part of a professional orchestra in Hull in the lead-up to City of Culture year.

Youth Music has awarded Hull’s Colour of Music project nearly £30,000 to ensure the project goes ahead.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “This new project will offer high quality musical activities to young people in challenging circumstances, providing them with the opportunity to progress personally, musically and socially through long-term engagement.

“It will also help develop and sustain music-making locally in a fun and interactive way, with the chance to be part of the 2017 celebrations.”

Ruth Drake, Hull City Council’s arts development officer, added: “We can’t wait to start! This project will offer young people the amazing experience of being part of an orchestra using a wide range of world percussion, instruments and art forms.

“It will be a multi-sensory experience for all and will be big in time to celebrate for 2017!”
