George Osborne has committed to boosting railway links to Hull as the city’s time as UK City of Culture 2017 draws near.

The Chancellor said ways to speed up enhancement of Hull’s transport infrastructure were being examined by the Treasury, adding he would also bring in new rolling train stock to the area.

When it was suggested the Government would find it difficult to deliver on its commitments, Mr Osborne insisted better rail links were an essential part of his vision for turning the north of England into an economic powerhouse.

A move by First Hull Trains to electrify the 70-mile line between Hull and Selby seems to have come to a halt in the last few months, even though it was given the green light by the Government earlier this year.

First Hull, which proposes to carry out the scheme with a private finance initiative, has secured £30 million of the £94 million required.
