Two men arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man in west Hull on Valentine’s Day have been eliminated from Humberside Police enquiries.

Police were called to West Parade, near Spring Bank, at 6.04pm on Sunday following reports that Mateusz Szleper had sustained life-threatening injuries following an altercation with several people.

Mr Szleper was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary but later died from his injuries.

Humberside Police officers subsequently arrested two men, aged 38 and 30, on suspicion of murder on Sunday, but they have now been unconditionally released from police custody and eliminated from their enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Baldwin said: “Activity over the past days has included concentrated searches of the area where Mateusz died. We have recovered several items of interest to the investigation and those are now being forensically examined.

“My team has also been undertaking house-to-house enquiries and speaking to local businesses along with the community as a whole. Examination of CCTV also features prominently as part of the investigation.

“We are following up a number of lines of enquiry from information we have obtained and are receiving support from all quarters as we seek to bring to justice the person, or persons, responsible for the death of Mateusz.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Humberside Police on 01482 220 328, quoting log 385 of February 14; or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555.
