Tens of thousands of people in Hull drink too much alcohol, according to a new report. Hull City Council is going to focus on prevention, early intervention and treatment as part of its Alcohol Strategy.

Vicky Harris, from Public Health Hull, says 60,000 people drink too much, including 4,700 who drink at dangerous levels: “We know that lots of people enjoy a drink, they do it very safely, it doesn’t impact on their health. But for some people, alcohol does have a negative impact and it impacts on our communities.

“Alcohol has become linked to going out and having a good night out with your friends, it’s a socially accepted past-time, it’s where you all get together and I think that’s one of the things we want to challenge. You can still do all of those things, you just don’t have to get drunk to do it. But I just think that’s become the norm.”

She says they want to make sure they have the right support in place: “It doesn’t mean that all of those people will do something that is seriously damaging to themselves. But obviously, particularly for the 5,000 drinkers that are maybe drinking to the point where they have a serious health risk, we do want to make sure that the right packages are available to them.”
