The city’s in the top ten in the UK for heavy smokers and in the top 5 for poor diet, which impacts their eye health.

Optometrist Hannah Cooper explains some of the conditions a regular eye exam can pick up:

“Diabetes is one of them for a general health point of view, blood pressure as well. We can pick up on more advanced things like tumors . It is advised to get your eyes checked every two years but obviously more often or earlier if you have any concerns.”

Parents are also being encouraged to have an eye exam at the same time as their children.

Hannah explains why it’s important children become used to regular eye tests:

“We don’t know what they’re actually seeing. They think they’re seeing OK unless it’s actually checked. They might  have blurred vision in one eye. That could be affecting how they’re learning at school and developing.”
