Almost half of people in the North of England have never heard of the Northern Powerhouse, research reveals.

A BBC-commissioned survey shows 44% have never heard of the policy, which aims to connect cities such as Hull, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, while 20% are aware of it but know nothing about it.

The plan is the brainchild of Chancellor George Osborne. He wants to create an economic force in the north to rival that of London and the South East, bridging the economic gap between the north and south.

It would improve transport links between towns and cities in the north, plus attract more investment.

Local politicians would also be given greater powers – and 82% of those polled agree local politicians should have control over services like transport and health, rather than having MPs in London make decisions for them.

Mr Osborne’s vision is for the Northern Powerhouse to compete with the major economic regions of Europe.

Some 50% of respondents are confident the government will boost the north’s economy, yet 40% disagree. As many as 65% of 18-24-year-olds are confident it will boost the economy, while 47% of over-55s agree.

Northern powerhouse? Closed the coal mines, closing the power staions and now employees fighting to save the steel industry at Scunthorpe. Yes we are in the North, but hardly a powerhouse now!
