Hull City Council are launching a new service providing local discounts at an event at St Stephens Shopping Centre today.

People who sign up with the Hull People’s Premium will get regular updates on offers and deals to help them save money in the city.

The scheme is one of five key priorities in the Hull City Plan to create and sustain local jobs.

Anyone living in the city can join by texting HPP to 60999 which, after the initial set-up text, is free.

Residents can find out more at events being put on around the city, including at St Stephens Shopping Centre today from 2pm.

Information will be provided on how to save money on services and products that will reduce household expenditure, such as food, fuel and finance.

David Shepherd from Hull City Council says the aim is to make people’s money go further:

“We want to be able to allow people to gain access to the best choices, the best value that they can get out of living in the city; whether that be cheaper energy bills, cheaper groceries, sourcing local discounts, offers, promotions.”

He says it’ll also help local businesses promote themselves:

“What we want to be able to do is get a critical mass of people to sign up, join the club, then business will be attracted to having that direct access to those people. Hopefully we’ll get as many people signed up to it and that will make it an attractive source for businesses to do our own Hull version of Group On.”

Stephen Hodgson from Hull City Council says it could help make up for the impact of cuts on local services, that’s forced people to spend more:

“This is a necessity based on the cuts that have been passed down to us. The cuts have been harsh, the cuts have been severe. If it works and if it helps people, I think this is the start of what could be a massive anti-poverty measure for Hull.”

Councillor John Hewitt, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities, says

“We are keen to do all we can to help people make their money go further and the launch of Hull People’s Premium is a great initiative to do this.

“It’s simple and I urge all residents to sign up now to access a local guide to modern living that will help make your money go further.”
