A two-year-old boy was killed after the car he was travelling in mounted a motorway embankment and overturned.

The fatal crash has prompted officers from Humberside Police to launch an urgent appeal for witnesses.

The accident happened on the westbound carriageway of the M180 between junctions 4 and 3 at around 8.44am on Saturday December 13.

The boy who died was in the back of the black Vauxhall Meriva when it left the carriageway and rolled over before coming to rest on the motorway’s hard shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second child – a boy of three who was also a back-seat passenger in the car – was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.

The car’s driver, a man of 28, and his front-seat passenger – a 22-year-old woman – were also treated in hospital after sustaining minor injuries.

The accident, to which the air ambulance was called, left the westbound section of the motorway shut to traffic for several hours.

Anyone with any information about the accident is asked to contact Humberside Police by calling 101, quoting log 186 for Saturday December 13.
