Compensation claims, for damages to vehicles caused by potholes, has fallen in our area.

There’s been a fall in the number of pothole compensation claims by motorists in Hull and the East Riding who’ve suffered damage to their vehicles.

But, on average, there’s still one claim every 18 minutes in the UK – a slight improvement on last year which saw one claim every 11 minutes.

Philip Gomm from the RAC Foundation says our roads need improving:

“This is not a problem that’s gone away. Councils themselves estimate the backlog to be £10 / £11 billion pounds. Even the government says the road maintenance backlog on local roads is around £8.6 billion. That’s a lot of potholes that are still out there.”

In Hull, there were 127 claims in 2012/13 with 70 of those being successful. For the 2014/15 year, that dropped to 52 claims with 34 being a success.

The East Riding saw 225 claims in 2012/13, with just 6 being successful; And for this 2014/15 year, that figure fell to 72 with just 4 being successful.

Steve Gooding, Director of the RAC Foundation, says:

“One reading of these figures could be that local roads are in better condition than they were, but that does not square with councils’ own assessment that the road maintenance backlog is actually growing, not falling.

“Better roads don’t just benefit car drivers. While potholes are an inconvenience for those on four wheels, they can be a matter of life or death for those on two.”
