Many young people are already planning for their summer proms, pageants and race days.

We popped into Little Bird Boutique to find out more about choosing the perfect outfit.

The hot pink shop on Princes Avenue is filled to the brim with sequins, sashes and sparkles. They promise to bring girls in Hull ‘celebrity style with a high street price tag’.

“I would say the best way to avoid disappointment when shopping for a dress is to start early,” says Emma Holiday, LBB owner.

“We only sell one style of dress to each school, so if we’ve already sold the dress you’ve had you’re eye on to another girl in your school, you won’t be able to purchase it, or even try it on.”

“That’s great,” agrees a customer. “That means I won’t turn up in the same dress as my friends.”

Emma also advises girls to have an open mind when buying a dress: “You may think that you want a red dress, but don’t be totally opposed to trying on different colours and cuts, you might be surprised.”

So, we ask, what’s going to be hot this summer?

“This first dress [above] is a gorgeous blush pink fishtail by a brand called Angel Forever,” Emma tells us.

A popular style with teens, the sparkly figure-hugging gown elegantly curves out just above the knee. Meanwhile the sweetheart cutout neckline adds interesting detail.

“Wow, that red goes so lovely with your fair hair,” Emma compliments model Larissa Lawlor.

The striking ruby dress gently brushes the floor as Larissa walks around.

“It’s perfect for making a statement this summer, but also comes in cream and black if you want to tone it down a bit.”

“This Pia Michi dress is a celebrity favourite,” Emma explains. “It comes in seven colours, but nude pink is especially popular for proms.”

The intricate back detailing is ideal for anyone who wants to stand out this summer.

“Again, the fishtail and sparkle on this dress is very in right now,” Emma maintains.

Though similar to the first dress, this one seems to ooze glamour with the larger diamante stones.

An open back is a great way to show a bit of skin during a formal event.

“Ivory lace suits all shapes and sizes, it just seems to flatter everyone.”

“This dress is proof that you get what you pay for,” Emma continues.

“Yes, it’s steep at £550, but this gown is hand embellished and lovingly detailed front and back.”

The beautiful navy garment is classic yet stylish, with a 1920s feel to it.

Another navy number, this fit-and-flare-style gown sweeps along the floor as Larissa exits the changing room.

“Hermione is a Yorkshire company,” Emma informs us. “We like to buy from them to support local businesses.”

If you really want to go for something different this prom season, opt for a two-piece.

“I think this royal blue twin set screams Bollywood,” Emma says excitedly. “And the colour is a wonderful match for blondes.”
