Today is World Smile Day. We caught up with HEY Smile Foundation to find out more about the dedicated work they do to assist charities in our region.

Smile Foundation is a Hull and East Yorkshire based charity that supports other charities and community groups in fundraising, organising events and raising awareness.

“We work with partners and businesses to highlight the challenges that charities face, and then help them to source the tools and confidence to fix these issues,” explains Helen Binnie-Wise, Head of Marketing and Events.

Based at Gosschalks Solicitors, the Foundation is also involved in a lot of events, including the Humber Bridge Half Marathon and the Soap Box Derby.

“We get businesses involved to enhance and improve these events. It helps them to raise more money and build their profiles,” she expands.

Charities and projects can also sign up to The Smile Vault, which is a library of free resources and equipment. Today, there are over 250 charities and projects signed up to this handy stock of supplies.

“There’s everything in there that you can possibly want to borrow, from gazebos to microphones and giant games – ideal if you have a fundraising event coming up,” Helen adds.

Meanwhile, you can attend a free one-to-one session at their Charity Surgery to discuss any issues you are having with building your charity, such as fundraising and finance.

“We position ourselves as the go-to destination for advice and support.”

Next year, Smile Foundation will turn ten. Over the past few years it has generated over £1.5 million of community investment, as well as supporting more than 500 charitable ventures.

“Recent collaborations have included Men in Sheds, Fitmums and Friends, and Hull Families Project, who all make use of our Community Hub on Greenwood Avenue,” says Helen. “We also work closely with the Cornerhouse Care Project, which works with people who are at risk or have been involved in trafficking.”

In the meantime, associated businesses include Gosschalks Solicitors, Hugh Rice Jewellers, The One Point, Armitage Shanks, MKM Building Supplies Hull, the Sewell Group and 360 Chartered Accountants.

“On Friday 3 November, we will be hosting the Red and Black Ball. It’s a black and white tie fundraising ball with a twist,” Helen tells us.

Taking place at the KCOM Stadium, the event is also a celebration of the impact the Foundation and its associated partners have achieved across the region.

“We’re always looking for volunteers, so if you want to get involved, don’t hesitate to get in touch,” Helen encourages.

Opportunities can mean donating a small amount of time on a regular basis or taking part in a huge one-off event.

Otherwise, if you are a charity or a non-profit project, you can join the Smile community.
