More than 50 student nurses will be interviewed for permanent positions at Hull and East Yorkshire hospitals this week.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which has 190 vacancies, has begun a recruitment drive to tackle a shortage of nurses in the region.

The successful candidates will start work when they have completed their studies.

Simon Nearny, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s director of workforce and transformation, said: “That might sound a lot, but when you talk about 3,500 staff, it isn’t a lot.

“Most organisations are about 10 per cent (vacancies), 15 percent, some are even at 20 per cent – so some are in extremely difficult positions.”

Mr Nearny admitted that recruiting staff to the region has been tough because many people prefer to work in bigger cities nearby.

He added: “Leeds, Manchester, London, York – you know, bright lights and big cities. Some people think there’s more on offer there.

“But what is helping us is the City of Culture. You’ve got the city and you’ve got rural areas and it is paying dividends.”
