The Royal National Institute of Blind People’s warning of the link between smoking and sight loss.

Their message is to coincide with No Smoking Day today.

The RNIB say their research shows that almost three quarters (73%) of smokers have no idea that smoking can lead to sight loss. However, two in five people (42%) said they would now consider stopping after being told of the risks.

Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing the sight threatening condition age-related macular degeneration.

In Hull, nearly a third of the adult population are smokers – the highest level in England.

Clara Eaglen, RNIB’s Eye Health Manager, says:

“Many people are aware of the link between smoking and lung cancer and heart disease but don’t realise that the habit can also lead to loss of sight. We’re fully behind national No Smoking Day and this year’s theme of ‘Proud to be a Quitter’.”
