Hull’s road cleaning service has been shortlisted for a prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Diamond Jubilee award.

The Street Cleaning Service at the council, which looks after some 732 kilometres of road, is up for the Quality Improvement Award, which recognises the importance of reducing litter and of looking after the local environment.

It will go head to head with Luton Borough Council’s Street Cleansing Service for the top prize, with the winners in each of the 11 categories to be announced in Liverpool on February 12.

Hull City Council’s Martin Mancey said he was delighted that the street cleansing team had been honoured for the achievements it had made over the past five years.

He wished the team the best of luck, adding that he hoped they would bring the award home for the city and the council.

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said he was hugely impressed with the standards of entries across the board.
