Two women from Hull are helping to create matrimonial history by enjoying a civil marriage ceremony.

From today civil partnerships in England and Wales can be converted to a civil marriage and the Hull couple – Sally and Mandy – are wasting no time in doing so.

The pair, who entered into a civil partnership two years ago, are among the first in the country to be tying the knot now the legislation has come into force.

Sally and Mandy say they are delighted to now be able to marry and to be equal with any other couple.

Hull City Council’s Superintendent Registrar, Jill Fill, says the new legislation represents a key milestone for same sex couples.

Couples of the same sex who are in a civil partnerships can now be married by completing a simple administrative process with the option of following that up with a ceremony.

More than a dozen venues across Hull are licensed to host marriage ceremonies. They range from The Deep and the KC Stadium to Hull City Hall, the Guildhall and the city’s central library.
