The festive season has begun, and in true Christmas spirit it’s about time we all did a good deed.

Decembeard returns for 2016 as part of Beating Bowel Cancer’s campaign to support everyone affected by the disease. By simply throwing away your razor for one month and sprouting some facial hair, you can help raise the awareness and funds that the charity desperately needs.

A little bit about bowel cancer…

According to Cancer Research UK, there are more than 41,000 new cases of bowel cancer diagnosed each year. This means that it is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, affecting 1 in 14 men and 1 in 19 women.

The good news is that if it’s diagnosed early enough, it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases.

Some of the symptoms

There are a few key signs of bowel cancer, so make sure to keep an eye out for them. For a start, getting to know what is normal for your own body will help you to detect any unwanted changes.

Symptoms might include bleeding from the bottom or blood in your stools, a change in your toilet habits, a lump in your tummy and unexplained weight loss. Early signs can also be overlooked indicators, such as tiredness and abdominal pain.

How growing a beard can help

Decembeard is the campaign to create awareness and raise money for the Beating Bowel Cancer charity. So, stop shaving your stubble and let nature take its course.

When someone asks why you’re looking a little fuzzy, tell them what you’re doing and how they can help too. Also, encourage your family, friends and coworkers to sponsor you. That way you won’t give in to the urge to cut it all off during that in-between period of clean shaven and full-on grizzly bear.

And why not create a Decembeard team? A group of guys growing beards to fight the injustice of cancer. You can be the Beardvengers, or maybe the Hair-tastic Four!

Can’t grow a beard?

Don’t feel sad if you lack the capacity to grow a crumb catcher, as you can still help the cause. Beating Bowel Cancer have created an Advent Calendar Challenge, jam-packed with funny tasks to complete.

Get everyone you know to sponsor you to take part. Just be prepared to wear your hair in a funny style, give out random acts of kindness and get creative! And of course, remember to post the evidence to social media, using the hashtag #Decembeard.

Beating Bowel Cancer have also created a Decembeard Christmas Donation Voucher. Pop that at the top of your wish list or gift it to your Secret Santa.

Alternatively, opt for a more traditional fundraiser like a bake off or movie night. Christmas is the perfect excuse to enjoy a bit of baking, and you can give it a theme by adding beards to your Bakewells and moustaches to a Madeira.

Whilst they’re in the oven, celebrate the power of facial fluff with films like The Lord of the Rings, Castaway and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Already have a beard?

If you currently sport a few whiskers, you may need to enhance your beard in order to get it noticed. Luckily, there are plenty of unique accessories to take your bristles to the next level and add some festive charm.

Why not give Santa Claus a run for his money with glitter beard oil, beard baubles or beard bunting?
