Small food and drink companies are being encouraged to sell their products abroad under a new scheme by the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber has teamed up with UK Trade and Investment to run the Overseas Business Network Initiative.

The move comes in the wake of the successful Taste of Britain campaign, which saw samples of East Yorkshire food and drink sold in Polish supermarkets.

Lorraine Holt, who works for the chamber, said the success might be down to the appeal of “quintessential English afternoon tea”, and pointed out that there were many ex-pats and English chefs in the Eastern European country .

Members of the chamber also visited Malaysia earlier this year, where they began talks on a “Humber halal hub”.

Meanwhile Wold Top, a small brewery based near Driffield, could soon start exporting beer to Poland.

The firm’s director Tom Mellor is due to meet interested buyers following a trial run earlier this year.

He said British products had a good reputation in Poland, which makes it easier to find potential trade partners.
