Hull and wider East Yorkshire is to be hit by heavy downpours and thunderstorms, forecasters predict.

The Met Office expects the weather will take a turn for the worse on Friday, as the sunshine and warm temperatures are replaced by lightning, intense rain and a risk of flash flooding across the region.

It has issued a yellow warning of severe weather for Hull and Holderness between 6am and 11.50pm.

Local residents are advised to be aware of potential flooding and disruption to transport – road and rail – during the day, although the storms are expected to lift and clear away eastwards in the evening.

A spokesman for the Met Office says there is considerable uncertainty regarding the extent and timing of any thunderstorms.

He claims some areas within the warning area will more than likely escape the worst of the downpours, but is urging people travelling about to keep checking weather updates as the day goes on.
