Shoppers in towns such as Beverley, Bridlington and Goole will be able to park for free over the Christmas period.

East Riding Council has approved proposals to allow shoppers to park for free in car parks it owns across the region.

It is aiming to attract more people to the area and to make the Christmas period slightly cheaper for families.

The promotion, which is expected to cost the authority around £40,000, will start on Saturday December 6, when pay-and-display machines in car parks and on streets will be marked to indicate that there will be no charge for parking.

Beverley Chamber of Trade chairman Julian Minshall welcomed the move, saying it was great news for shoppers in the area.

All council car parks will be free on Saturday December 6, 13 and 20, and Sunday December 7, 14 and 21. There will be no charges from 8am on the Saturday to 8am on the following Monday.

The council was keen to point out the normal parking rules, such as minimum stays and disabled parking bays, would still apply.
