Drivers in East Yorkshire making one final dash to the shops before Christmas Day, and those heading to the sales, have been urged to plan ahead for traffic and cold weather conditions.

According to the Highways Agency, advance planning may be needed, in case traffic jams or icy conditions pose a threat to people’s progress.

Stephen Bush, emergency planning manager at the agency, said drivers should listen to local radio traffic reports before heading out either today (December 24) or later in the festive period.

He added that they can also do themselves a favour by checking out weather forecasts and checking opening times on the websites of major retail centres.

The Highways Agency has also launched a special Christmas information page, in order to help people get from A to B over the busy festive season.

If the weather does take a turn for the worse, the group said drivers should carefully check their vehicle before venturing out on shopping trips, with tyres among the areas which should be reviewed.
