Teachers in Hull and East Yorkshire are being urged to seek help if they are suffering from unmanageable stress.

The warning comes as a YouGov poll revealed that 53 per cent of teachers are thinking of leaving the profession in the next two years due to concerns over workloads and poor morale.

Counsellor Christine Tooze believes many teachers are struggling to cope with the current demands of the profession – and urges those with work-related problems to seek help.

She said: “People are taking stress on board and instead of dealing with the stress, it then goes into their workload and into their home life and then you’ve got someone who’s distressed. It’s a job they wanted to do but they’ve been put off by the workload and the time it’s taken.

“They’re helping our kids get a decent education and I don’t think they get the credit. If we recognise that now, we can make a change.

“Some people have walked out of school already and gone to no jobs. That shows the amount of stress people are under.”
