Campanologists descended on East Yorkshire in their scores for an annual meeting this holiday weekend.

The 118th edition of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers’ yearly gathering saw all church bells in Beverley and surrounding areas rung by Monday.

Almost 200 enthusiasts from around the world descended on the region to complete the marathon feat.

Bell ringers from North America, New Zealand and Australia joined in the fun during the Council’s first trip to the district in 31 years.

To mark the occasion, Radio 4 staged a special version of its Sunday Worship programme. This was recorded from Hull’s Holy Trinity Church on Sunday.

The Council, which is now 124 years old, represents bell ringers in Britain and further afield.

These include countries such as New Zealand, Canada, the US, Italy, South Africa and Australia. It speaks on behalf of 65 affiliated groups. Winchester and Portsmouth will stage next year’s meeting.
