Newland Avenue is celebrated for its independent eateries, and the newly refurbished Zoo Cafe is an exciting development.

Originally opened in the early 1990s, Zoo is located at 80 Newland Avenue, down the alley that’s also home to Judy’s Attic and Embroidery by Dezign.

Hull’s only vegetarian and vegan cafe, the bright, friendly and colourful retreat has received a thorough renovation.

We spoke to the new owner, Russ, about what Zoo has on offer for visitors to the area:

“We’ve worked closely with Giroscope to completely refresh the entire space,” he tells us. “We only reopened two weeks ago and there’s been a phenomenal response from customers so far.”

The cafe serves fresh, healthy food from its wide-ranging menu. Catering for vegan diets as well as vegetarian palates, it’s the perfect place for a quick coffee, a tasty meal or a full day of relaxation.

The menu presents hot grilled ciabattas with fun names, such as The Greek Squeak and The Big Red One. Alongside these are burgers, burritos and nachos, plus a delicious soup of the day.

There’s also a cooked breakfast, herby mushroom on toast, shakshuka (eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chilli peppers and onions), and nutritious muesli.

We went for the yummy French toast, topped with fresh and flavoursome strawberries and berries. This went perfectly with a frothy coffee.

Speaking of caffeine kicks, you can’t go wrong with River City Coffee. The Hull-based roastery produces high quality single origin beans, whilst putting aside some proceeds to help the local community.

If you’d prefer a different type of beverage, you can choose from fruit juices, fizzy drinks, a range of teas (including Gunpowder Green), and creamy shakes available in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.

There’s a really lovely atmosphere in Zoo and you can tell that the team members love what they do. Continuing the original vibe of a neighbourhood cafe offering a warm welcome, it’s a chilled and happy place to be.

Then there’s the upstairs area, which really does look amazing. You can tell how much time and effort Russ and the team have put into its creation.

Comfortable and spacious, there are some design features that really pop. Probably the best example is the vibrant green wallpaper with repeating vervet monkey pattern.

Something else you’ll notice about Zoo is its many plants and large amounts of natural light. Fitting its name perfectly, the place feels like a pocket of the natural world.

Then there’s the outdoor seating area, which is a delightful sun trap during summer.

“We hope to welcome customers, old and new, to this little oasis in the heart of Newland Avenue,” says Russ.

We definitely recommend popping down to see what all the fuss is about. Opening times are 10am-4:30pm Tuesday-Sunday.

If you’d like to get more a feel for what’s on offer before you go, you can view the menu online.
