Mousey Brown’s is the latest vibrant addition to the newly renovated Humber Street. We popped in for a trim and a catch up with the owners.

The brand new salon prides itself on adding a modern twist to classic styles. This resonates through everything they do, from the repurposed furniture to the fantastic hair creations. Here, everyone is welcome to be anything they want to be, and for a really affordable price.

“Since opening, we’ve worked on a whole range of clients, from kids to pensioners, rockabillies to punks,” explains Sarah Clayton, stylist and co-owner.

“Humber Street has become its own little village and we’re loving being based here,” co-owner Andrew Hampel adds.

Andrew and Sarah originally met at a vintage fair in Hull Minster. Andrew was showcasing his collection of retro horror films. In the meantime, Sarah was running one of her pop-up salons, which she regularly hosts at events, such as Lou Lou’s Vintage Fair and Skin Deep Magazine’s Tattoo Conventions. And, as they say, the rest is history.

“Older people love popping in because it’s a bit of nostalgia” reveals Sarah. “Meanwhile, the younger ones are after styles that perhaps other salons don’t offer.”

Sarah specialises in more complicated looks and used to teach these intricate styles at Hull College:

“I also work closely with Hull Truck Theatre, styling the cast. I often use wigs and hairpieces too. City of Culture has been great – working on Richard III and The Hypocrite was just fantastic.”

The salon is also open an impressive seven days a week and hours extend until 8pm on Thursday and Friday. This is ideal if you’ve been invited to last-minute after work drinks.

For this Saturday’s Humber Street Sesh, Sarah is offering on-trend glitter partings to festival-goers.

“Recently, we’ve had a lot of people asking for bright colours, pastels and bleach outs,” she tells us. “We do all sorts, though; from contemporary looks and wedding hair, to 1920s flapper ‘dos and mohawks.”

Andrew sums it up in one sentence: “Mousey Brown’s is a place for individuals to be themselves.”

On top of all this, Mousey Brown’s also has an in-house nail technician and a range of EVO products for sale: “We love this brand. It’s accessible, affordable, yet high quality. Each bottle has its own personality and it’s also cruelty-free and eco-friendly,” enthuses Sarah.

Andrew’s favourite is the comically-named Wally Massage Soap.

Hilariously, many culture vultures have been wandering into the building thinking it’s an art installation: “It might be because of our old-fashioned theatre chairs that double up as a waiting area for clients,” chuckles Andrew.

With the beautiful artwork and designs hanging from the deep red walls and distinctive furnishings, it’s not surprising that people have been mistaken.

Mousey Brown’s is located at 14 Humber Street in Hull. You can find out more information on the their website.
