Thousands of Hull households were without water on Wednesday after large swathes of the city were hit by pressure difficulties.

Supplier Yorkshire Water has blamed the problems on an electricity-related technical error.

The company traced the glitch to water treatment plants at Keldgate (Cottingham) and Tophill Low (off Driffield).

The postcodes HU8 and HU9 took the worst of the impact. Other codes affected included HU9, HU7, HU6, HU5 and HU1.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said water stocks took many hours to get back to normal later on Wednesday after the fault was fixed.

The company apologised for any inconvenience caused. Yorkshire Water investigators intend to find out just how many households were affected. But the total is estimated at a five-figure sum.

Some schools closed in the Hull area because of the absence of running water.
