City Health Care Partnership (CHCP) is an independent organisation that helps people in Hull and the surrounding area to stay healthy.

They recently shared advice with us regarding some of their services, including minor injuries units in Hull.

Now that we’re over a week into January, some people who resolved to quit smoking might be encountering obstacles. We spoke to Lucy Flower, Communications, Marketing and Engagement Team Lead at CHCP, about the support they offer.

“If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to stop smoking, 2017 could be the year you get rid of cigarettes for good. Hull’s independent Stop Smoking team is here to help you do it,” Lucy said.

“Research shows that you are five times more likely to quit smoking successfully with support. So if you are ready to get rid of smelly breath, smoker’s cough, empty pockets and bad teeth along with the cigarettes, there are lots of ways to get help.”

The Hull Stop Smoking Service offers a wide range of local services that are completely free to access. These range from walk-in sessions (no appointment needed) and one-to-ones, to an online programme and even mobile phone support.

Wendy Samuels, Stop Smoking Service Manager, explained: “We know that quitting isn’t easy but we want to reassure smokers that free and convenient support is available for them.

“Our team of trained advisors are here to offer convenient and practical help throughout the journey.”

Quitting smoking is one of the best things people can do for their health. William was a heavy smoker for 24 years until Smokefree Hull helped him to quit.

“I was smoking pretty much a pack of tobacco every day and doing hardly any exercise. It was starting to take a toll on my health,” William explained.

“I’ve noticed a big difference in my energy levels from stopping smoking. I regularly go on long walks and feel much fitter and healthier, and I’m definitely wealthier! I haven’t added up how much I’ve saved since quitting but it must be thousands of pounds.

“I would recommend the Smokefree Hull service to anyone who wants to stop smoking. They are really supportive and helpful and make the whole process much easier. I’m so glad I’m no longer a slave to tobacco.”

To use the service, phone 08003 247111, text QUIT to 61825*, visit readytostopsmoking.co.uk, or download the QuitPal app from Google Play and the App Store.

“You can also use the brilliant Quit Buddy SMS text service to help keep you on track,” Lucy said. “Just text BUDDY to 61825* and start your journey to getting rid of cigarettes for good.”

According to NHS Choices, Within two to 12 weeks of stopping smoking, your blood circulation improves. This makes all physical activity, including walking and running, much easier.

You will give a boost to your immune system too, making it easier to fight off colds and flu. The increase in oxygen in the body can also reduce tiredness and the likelihood of headaches.

“We’re ready to help you quit smoking right here, right now,” Lucy added. “Improve your health, save money and achieve your New Year’s resolution with Smokefree Hull!”
