The Magpie’s Den is a cosy vintage fashion boutique, tucked away in Paragon Arcade.

We nipped in to find out their best picks for the new season.

Owner, Lucy Johnson, kindled her interest in high fashion whilst working at a hairdressers in Hull. She flicked through the magazines that were scattered about the salon during her lunch breaks and quickly fell in love with the industry.

“Later on I was in London, rummaging through the vintage rails. I noticed that you could get the original version of the fantastic pieces on the runway catwalk,” Lucy recalls.

“It was then my interest in the combination of vintage style and high fashion began.”

Her stunningly decorated emporium of clothes, jewellery and homeware has now been established for six years.

She has also delved into the world of online retailing, opening a store on ASOS marketplace and regularly selling pieces to people across the world via Instagram.

Outfit 1

“This outfit (above) is a brilliant example of bright and loud, but toning it down with a muted coloured jacket to make it more wearable,” Lucy explains.

“If you’re nervous about crazy patterns, pair it with something plain and it will look great.”

Shirt: £14 / Coat: £27 / Handmade Skinny Scarf: £5

Outfit 2

“I’ve chosen this beautiful oriental dress as my interpretation of Prada’s latest runway collection,” enthuses Lucy.

“The jacket is genuine suede. I think that no matter what year it is, a suede 70s jacket will always be a top choice for summer.”

Dress: £18 / Coat: £34

Outfit 3

“Again, this dress is inspired by the runways. The pink frills emulate what’s happening on the Gucci catwalks,” Lucy tells us.

This incredible knowledge of fashion and style is what sets The Magpie’s Den apart from many other vintage shops.

She attentively follows the trends and details that major designers are carrying and then offers her customers an original, vintage piece.

“Vintage doesn’t have to look old and frumpy. I can offer you a unique piece that celebrates what’s currently on the catwalk,” she adds.

Dress: £34 / Belt: £7

Outfit 4

“This next outfit incorporates both cool and warm tones to create a fantastic look.”

The silver, metallic blazer matched with the orange tones of the blouse fit together surprisingly well. Meanwhile, the space-themed necklace gives this look a futuristic edge.

Blazer: £17 / Necklace: £8 / Shirt: £14

Outfit 5

“I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from Vetements for this combination. I love the way that they incorporate sportswear into everyday style,” Lucy continues.

“For me personally, I love contrasting this with feminine details. And what’s more girly than a bright pink shirt?”

Handmade Necktie: £5 / Blouse: £14 / Sports Vest: £14 / Cactus Necklace: £4.99 / Stone Necklace: £10

Outfit 6

“If I had a summer wedding to attend, I’d definitely be wearing this dress,” Lucy points out.

“It’s very classic, whilst also being very on trend with the ditzy floral print.”

Dress: £35 / Choker: £6.50

Outfit 7

“This last outfit is a complete clash of eras. It’s very eclectic,” says Lucy.

“You can dress this up with some latex trousers for a city vibe, or dress it down with some Levi’s shorts for a festival look.”

Top: £14 / Shirt: £14 / Hat: £12 / Sunglasses: £8

You can find The Magpie’s Den down Paragon Arcade in Hull city centre or on their ASOS Marketplace store.
