Drivers are expecting traffic jams galore as one of the busiest junctions in Hull is closed at the weekend.

The junction linking Ferensway, Beverley Road, Spring Bank and Freetown Way will be closed from 8am to 10pm on Sunday to allow resurfacing work to be carried out.

Hull City Council says the works are timed to avoid rush hour periods, but drivers are far from convinced.

Glen Woodhall, manager of taxi firm 82 Cars, is expecting mayhem at the busy junction. He claims a lot of people will be caught unaware due to a lack of information about the works.

Claire Robinson, from bus company East Yorkshire Motor Services, also predicts long delays during the 14-hour closure.

She says the firm has been forced to put in place emergency diversions because of gridlocked traffic caused by works that started in January. Five minute bus journeys have taken as long as one hour in some cases.

The junction in the north-west of the city, known as Blundell’s Corner, is where the A1079 to Beverley, the A165 Freetown Way and Ferensway meet routes from the west. It is a main route into and through Hull.
