Specialising in bespoke suits, coats and shirts, Cock of the Walk is a hidden gem in Hull.

We spoke with owner and Savile Row trained coat maker, Gillian Long, to find out more.

“We are bespoke tailors, so we do everything that a traditional tailors would and more. We make suits that are unique to the customer, they get to choose the colour, cloth, style and cut and everything is made specifically to their measurements,” explains Gillian.

“I would say it’s a highly personal experience. It’s not just a product, it’s a service,” she points out. “A lot of our customers treat it like a bit of pamper time; we measure every inch of their bodies to make sure it looks spot on. And in the end, you get a suit that you can take home. There’s isn’t really anything else like it.”

“We can accommodate all sorts of requests. If you have loads of ideas, we can work with that to create your piece. However, if you have no clue what you want, we can help you come to a decision,” Gillian adds. “Once we had a customer who had a suit made especially for watching Hull City in.”

Even the service is tailored to how the customer likes to shop. With everything made in their workshop in Hull, Cock of the Walk makes regular visits to national and international clients in Manchester and London.

“We meet our customers in fitting rooms located on Savile Row. This is where we can get them measured and see what they want from the suit. Then, we head back up north to put it all together.”

“Many of our customers are northerners, who have moved down south but still want to use a northern tailor,” Gillian chuckles.

Meanwhile, many of their customers will travel up to Hull specially to meet the talented team behind their brand new outfit.

“One of our clients took a London cab up to the city to meet us and collect his suit. For many, it’s a great day out for them and they like to see the work that has gone into their clothing.”

Gillian has been working as a tailor for almost two decades, starting when she was 19.

“I did a degree in clothing manufacture and design, I then trained on Savile Row. I also worked in Manchester for a time.”

Whilst Cock of the Walk provides a full, bespoke and handmade service, they also offer a more affordable line.

“If you’re having a suit made for you for the first time I would suggest doing a bit of research in magazines or sites like Instagram and Pinterest. If we have a few photos to work from, it can really help us understand what you want,” she says.

“And of course, just enjoy the experience. It may sound a little daunting but it’s really not. You’ll probably enjoy it a lot more than you think.”

Cock of the Walk can be found on 9 Grimston Street in Hull. You can also visit their website for style inspiration.
