Construction work on a new medical building at the University of Hull is due to begin this week.

The £25 million facility will include a mock hospital ward, operating theatre, intensive care facilities and a large lecture theatre.

There will also be a ground-floor atrium and research space for students to use.

“Medicine and Health are strengths of the University of Hull, and the new health campus will contribute significantly to our health offer and research, and to the student experience,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor Calie Pistorius.

“It is the latest project in a £200m investment programme at the University and we look forward to welcoming the first students through the doors.”

The medical unit is expected to be completed by 2017 in time for the City of Culture celebrations. It is part of a new £28 million health campus being built on site.

Assem Allam, chairman of Hull City Football Club Assem Allam, has donated £7 million towards the cost.
