Specialist vets were called to check on the welfare of penguins after a fire at a Hull aquarium.

A fire broke out at The Deep around lunchtime on Wednesday.

Visitors had to be evacuated after a blaze started in a locked electrical cupboard next to city centre aquarium’s penguin enclosure.

Three fire crews attended the scene and quickly put out the fire but smoke had spread quickly.

No one was injured in the incident and the penguins were checked over by vets.

The Deep remains closed to the public but is expected to reopen on Friday.

Those with pre-booked tickets for events today will be refunded, staff have said.

Humberside Fire and Rescue are investigating the incident, but it is not being treated as suspicious.

The penguin enclosure opened in 2014, and is one of The Deep’s most popular attractions.
