Humberside Police has identified the man who was killed after being stabbed in west Hull on Valentine’s Day as Mateusz Szleper.

Police were called to West Parade, near Spring Bank, at 6.04pm on Sunday following reports that a 21-year-old man had sustained life-threatening injuries following an altercation with several people.

Mr Szleper was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary but later died from his injuries.

Humberside Police subsequently arrested two men, aged 38 and 30, on suspicion of murder and on Tuesday its officers were granted more time to question them.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Baldwin said: “The 21 year old victim at the centre of this murder investigation has now been identified and named as Mateusz Szleper (21) who lived locally in the Spring Bank area of Hull.

“I am also able to confirm that a post mortem examination completed yesterday concluded that Mr Szleper died as the result of a number of stab wounds.  Our officers are continuing to support his family at this time.

“As our investigation continues with a number of lines of enquiry being explored, I would like to reiterate my appeal to the public to come forward with information.  We believe an altercation amongst a group of individuals in the West Parade/Spring Bank area at around 6pm on Sunday preceded the death of this young man.

“Whilst our officers continue to undertake local enquiries with area searches and detailed examination of CCTV, information from the public is also sought. We know that a number of people were out and about in the vicinity and it is likely someone will have seen something which could be of importance to our investigation. I would urge those people to come forward and call us.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Humberside Police on 01482 220 328, quoting log 385 of 14/02/16; or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
