Yorkshire Water say nearly a third of the thousands of sewer blockages in Hull are caused by wet wipes being flushed down the toilet, with engineers called out to unblock Hull’s sewers nearly 400┬átimes this year.

The company says people are using wet wipes as a ‘luxury toilet roll’ and more than a third of blockages are being caused by them.

James Harrison, Technical Manager at Yorkshire Water, says: “We’re noticing a significant increase in the amount of sewer blockages related to wet wipes in particular.

“We understand information from manufacturers can be quite confusing as some products say flushable on the packaging.”

Yorkshire Water’s ‘Stop it. Don’t block it.‘ campaign aims to highlight the amount of blockages it has to fix and t make customers aware of what items shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet.
