It may be a small East Yorkshire village with fewer than 800 inhabitants. But Wetwang has proved it is no small fry when it comes to great chips.

Harpers of Main Street has been honoured as one of the country’s leading chippies as voted for by the public.

‘s annual Choice Chip Awards crowned Harpers the North East’s Best Chippy Chips, after it won the East Yorkshire title last year.

Charlotte Congrave, Harpers’ manager, said customers rather than “mystery diners” voting for the shop made the winning feeling all the greater.

She called its chips “unsoggy”, “soft” and “nice” inside and very “crispy” outside.

A record 68,000 enthusiasts cast their votes across 900 competitors in 10 regions across Britain this year.

The awards were announced to mark the current National Chip Week’s festivities.
