Strong winds and an overturned lorry forced officials to close the Humber Bridge yesterday.

A 30mph speed restriction was later put in place on the bridge, but its complete closure caused traffic congestion elsewhere in the area.

Initially the bridge was closed to only high-sided vehicles but the Humberside Police road traffic unit later informed the public that both carriageways were closed to all traffic in both directions because of the strong winds.

A lorry had overturned close to one of the bridge’s 150-metre high support towers and recovery vehicles had to remove the lorry from the carriageway.

The wind affected other routes too, with a carriageway of the M62 on the Ouse Bridge closed after a caravan was blown off a trailer.

According to Humberside Police the motorway was closed between junctions 37 and 36 close to Howden.

Drivers in the area said a caravan was on its side in a precarious position close to the edge of the bridge over the River Ouse.
