The UK Windsurfing Championships at Bridlington had to be postponed – because it was too windy.

The country’s leading windsurfers gathered in the town on Saturday for the annual event but blustery conditions off the East Yorkshire coast took the wind out of their sails and the series of races had to be put off until the following day.

The UK Windsurfing Association said the gusts of up to 40mph were too strong for the races off the town’s North Beach to safely go ahead as scheduled.

Hundreds of spectators had been expected to watch the races, which had been due to start at 11am, from Bridlington’s North Beach Promenade.

But at 9am the wind was averaging 36mph, a speed the Met Office says is fairly unusual for this time of year. A gust of 40mph was recorded at 3pm.

Bridlington has hosted the championships’ series of action-packed races for over 20 years.
