The proportion of people employed in the Yorkshire and Humber region has risen to its highest ever level, official figures have revealed.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that 71.9 per cent of people in the region are in work.

The ONS also revealed that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in the region is now at a 40-year low, while the 5.1 per cent unemployment rate is the lowest in a decade.

Seventeen per cent fewer Hull people are on Jobseekers Allowance or are out of work and on Universal Credit, compared with a year ago. The overall figure for East Yorkshire is 16 per cent.

Gill Dillon, employer and partnership manager at Jobcentre Plus in Hull, said: “I know there are still not enough jobs and for some people it can still be hard to get a job, but generally we are seeing more jobs across different sectors.

“We are currently recruiting for retail positions and hospitality positions and manufacturing, so there are jobs there all the time.”

She added: “People who are flexible, prepared to look at lots of different options, do all they can to increase the skills that will help get them into work there is every reason to be optimistic.”
