Yorkshire and the Humber is building more new homes than London, while detached properties are making a comeback nationwide.

A report by the National House Building Council (NHBC) reveals the region registered a total of 8,625 new-build properties last year.

This represents a remarkable rise of 24% on 2013, putting it ahead of the capital in terms of year-on-year percentage growth.

Wales, Northern Ireland, the West Midlands and the South East are the only other areas beating London on this front.

The NHBC also claims more detached homes are being built now than at the height of the property boom in 2007, as demand for bigger properties grows among first-time buyers and those looking to move up the ladder.

Some 38,113 new detached properties were registered with the industry body in 2014 – the highest number recorded since 2004.

Overall, 145,174 new homes were registered across the UK with the NHBC last year – up 9% on 2013 – as the economic recovery continues to gather pace. It is the highest annual total on record since 2007.
