Incidents requiring the presence of police dogs in Hull and East Yorkshire are to be policed by a unit covering both Humberside and South Yorkshire, it has emerged.

It is being reported that Humberside Police is to merge its dog unit with the South Yorkshire force’s to cut costs.

The new unit will be run out of two bases – one in Melton, East Yorkshire, and the other in Sheffield.

Humberside Police now have a dozen dogs and handlers and it is being reported by the BBC that the new unit will have a total of 25 with South Yorkshire losing 12 officers and animals.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police says the merger with Humberside’s dog unit will enable the forces to continue to provide a vital role while reducing costs to help meet budget cuts.

In 2013, Humberside Police axed its mounted unit and now pays to bring in horses from other forces when they are required.
