The number of people out of work in Yorkshire and the Humber dropped by 2,000 in the quarter to October, according to figures by the Office for National Statistics.

A total of 191,000 people in the region were unemployed, 1% fewer than between July and September, the ONS said.

This means the region’s overall unemployment rate between August and October was 7.1%.

The region which saw the biggest increase during the period was the South East, where 3,000 more people were out of work than between July and September.

Nationwide, unemployment was down and a record 30.8 million people were in work – 588,000 more than at the same time last year.

However, the drop in the overall unemployment figure – of 63,000 – was the smallest in the past 12 months.

Just over 900,000 people were claiming jobseeker’s allowance in November, a decrease of 26,900 compared with the previous month and the 25th fall in a row.
