These days your mobile phone is so much more than a device to help you keep in touch. There are apps available that can help you with just about anything – from weight loss, to saving money, to finding the nearest cash machine – there is an app for nearly everything. Here’s a list of our favourite apps that make life a little easier in achieving your goals.

In their own words, MyFitnessPal is the fastest, easiest to use calorie counter app. Medical studies have proven the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to keep track of the food you eat. Fad diets may be great for a quick loss but chances are you’ll put back on all the weight you’ve lost as soon as you eat normally. MyFitnessPal is a healthy way to lose weight – it creates realistic goals based on your information and gives you a steady lifestyle change which is easy to stick to.

Update your diary on the web or on your phone and the app will automatically sync so you can track it anywhere, any time. You can track the progress of your weight loss from the very start, which is a great motivation booster. Plus, you’ll have access to their blog for all the latest healthy eating and exercise tips to give your weight loss a boost.

Smoke Free

Smoke Free is the app to help you give up smoking for good. Evidence based and theory driven – using the app you’ll be helping scientists understand how they can better help future quitters. The easy to use dashboard provides by-the-second updates of how much money you’ve saved, how long you’ve been smoke free and how many cigarettes you’ve not smoked.

The dashboard also shows the health benefits and you can see how your blood pressure, oxygen and carbon monoxide levels, taste, smell, breathing, energy, circulation and risk of lung cancer returns to normal.

Toshl Finance

The Toshl Finance app is great for managing your money; you’ll know exactly where your money is going. All of those little purchases on your lunch break really add up.

Enter your details and set yourself a budget to remind you not to spend too much or go too crazy in the sales helping you save a little at the end of each month. If you have a specific expense you need to budget for, you can do that too and you’ll even get reminders to make sure you never forget to pay a bill. Toshl is a great travel companion as you can manage your finances in any currency and you don’t need to worry about the safety of your financial information. The app locks with a passcode and everything is kept completely safe and secure on the Toshl website.

Barclays LifeSkills

The Barclays LifeSkills app is great for young people to unlock the skills and experience they need for the job they want. The app provides information and tips on people skills, choosing the right career, how to go about getting a job, using their time wisely in school and managing money. Within each of these are simple steps including: writing your CV, making connections, understanding job adverts, building self-confidence and preparing for an interview.

Businesses can sign up on their website too – and offer work experience and placements to young people using LifeSkills. This is a great app for young people and students still in education.

These useful apps are all free of charge and are available from most good app stores – check yours for more information.
