If you’re already feeling festive (the Christmas lights switch-on is just around the corner), I recommend you take a trip to Winifred Holtby Academy to watch Hull Musical Society bring the beloved tale of A Christmas Carol to life. But this isn’t just any production, it’s the fabulous story of Scrooge, written by celebrated English playwright Leslie Bricusse.

From the very first moment, the stage bursts into action with a host of Dickensian characters flittering and fluttering, chittering and chattering as they go about their Christmas Eve duties; a stark contrast to old Ebenezer grumbling in his chilly counting house. From here we follow Scrooge as he discovers that greediness doesn’t pay, that the milk of human kindness is the loveliest drink in the world, and that he has much to do to escape an afterlife of shackles and chains. It’s a very jolly show with a cast of adults and children that really go for it, filling the room with energy, joy and plenty of cheer.

Hull Musical Society make use of minimalist props, excellent costumes and clever projections to draw the audience into a world of street markets, top hats and huge turkeys, with the spooky bits making it the perfect show to enjoy around Halloween. You can find out more about HMS on their website.

Tickets are just £9 for adults and £6 for children, available from Eden inside Prospect Centre or by calling 07519 897596. Parking at Winifred Holtby is free and refreshments can be purchased inside the academy.

Scrooge runs nightly at 7:30pm until Saturday 31st October, with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm.
