Alonso airlifted to hospital

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso has been taken to hospital after being involved in a heavy crash during the final day of the Formula One pre-season test in Barcelona.

The 33-year-old Spaniard was moved away from the track by ambulance after the incident, which occurred just before turn four at the Circuit de Catalunya.

He was then taken by helicopter to hospital, with circuit officials reporting he was “okay and conscious”.

“After Alonso’s accident the activity in the #Circuit stops. Cars will be back on track at 14h #F1 #BarcelonaTest”

Alonso was initially taken to the medical centre at the circuit before being transferred to hospital by helicopter.

“After the accident, @alo_oficial has been taken to the #Circuit medical center on an ambulance #F1 #BarcelonaTest,” the Circuit posted on Twitter.

“It seems that @alo_oficial is ok. We hope that everything’s alright and all ends with just a shock!! #F1 #BarcelonaTest #Circuit

“Alonso has been moved to the hospital by helicopter to continue with the medical exam #F1 #BarcelonaTest #Circuit.”

Alonso’s McLaren team later Tweeted: ” Fernando is conscious and is speaking. He has been airlifted to hospital for further checks.”
