Timea Bacsinszky beat Caroline Garcia in a final for the second time in as many weekends to win the Monterrey Open on Sunday.

French third seed Garcia, who was beaten 6-3 6-0 by Bacsinszky in last Sunday’s Mexico Open final, won the first set 6-4 but was trailing 3-1 in the second when play was suspended due to heavy showers in the region.

A four-hour delay ensued before play was able to resume at 11pm local time (5am GMT), but when it did Swiss fourth seed Bacsinszky, who beat Sara Errani to reach the final, wasted little time in squaring the match by winning the second set 6-2.

The final set was, understandably, a tense affair and after Bacsinszky secured a break of serve to go 4-3 ahead she eventually held in a 15-minute eighth game to go 5-3 in front.

Garcia, who dispatched defending champion Ana Ivanovic in 54 minutes in the other semi-final, then held to remain in the contest but so did Bacsinszky to win her third WTA singles title with a 4-6 6-2 6-4 victory in a match – excluding the four-hour rain delay – that lasted two hours and 44 minutes.
