Tim Bresnan will join the England Lions squad for their final three one-day matches against South Africa A.

Bresnan has been playing in Australia’s Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes but the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed he will fly home before joining the Lions squad in South Africa.

The Lions drew their two four-day unofficial Tests and seamer Harry Gurney, spinner Stephen Parry, all-rounders Samit Patel and Ben Stokes and batsman Jason Roy have since joined the squad. Bresnan will follow in time for the third of five one-dayers, in Potchefstroom on January 31.

National selector James Whitaker said: “The Lions’ one-day series in South Africa means we can have a group of players involved in high quality and competitive 50-over cricket in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.

“Joining the squad will give Tim the opportunity to show that he is ready to be considered if a replacement is required.”

Bresnan has played 23 Tests and 118 limited-overs internationals for England, but his last appearance in any format came last March at the World Twenty20 before he underwent elbow surgery.

The Yorkshire seamer joined the full England squad for a training session in Hobart before their Tri-Series clash with Australia, which saw them beaten by three wickets on Friday.
