Wakefield Wildcats have been stunned by the sudden resignation of Brian Smith as head coach.

The 61-year-old Australian, who had been in the job just nine months, is the second coaching casualty since Super League kicked off just under five weeks ago.

Smith, older brother of Warrington head coach Tony Smith, took training at Featherstone on Tuesday morning before informing his players of his decision to quit and then drove to the club’s Belle Vue stadium to break the news to chairman Michael Carter.

“I can confirm that Brian Smith has resigned his position as of today,” Carter said. “There will be no further comment until a press conference on Wednesday.”
